Where to Stay on Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba has no single best base. This guide compares the main areas, from the town and its tour pickups to the Cat Co beaches, Viet Hai village and nights on Lan Ha Bay.

Four ways to base yourself

Most visitors choose between Cat Ba Town, the Cat Co beaches, the village of Viet Hai and a night on the bay. Each suits a different trip. We group stays by location and do not rate individual hotels or link to booking sites. Room rates change by season, so check current prices directly with the property.

This is an independent guide, not a booking service. Before you commit, think about three things: how you arrive, what you want to do each day, and how close you need to be to the ferry or the tour pier.

Cat Ba Town

For a first visit, the town is the practical choice. Tour operators on Cat Ba offer pickup from hotels in the town, so you do not need to organize your own ride to the pier. Hotels and the main square are close together.

The ferry terminal and the cable car station are outside the town, so allow time for a transfer when you arrive and leave. Our getting there guide has the details.

The area is changing. In July 2025 a press report described land reclamation and tourism construction in the central bay, with complaints about noise and changed sea views. That is a dated observation, not a statement about any one hotel. Before booking, ask about construction near the property and about the view you will actually get.

Cat Co beaches

Cat Co 1, 2 and 3 are listed in a local traffic notice of April 2026 as tourist beaches. Flamingo lists Cat Co 1 and 2 among its event spaces, and Accor gives Cat Co 3 as the location of Hotel Perle d'Orient. That tells you where they are, not how good they are.

Hotel locations do not settle beach access. Ask whether the beach is open to non-guests and what services are on offer. Vehicle limits applied on the road to Cat Co 1 and 2 from 30 April to 5 September 2026, but that period has ended, so ask your host about current access. Check the coastal path between the beaches on the day before you plan a walk.

Viet Hai and the national park side

Regional press describes Viet Hai as a base for community tourism that connects hiking, cycling and boat trips. It suits walkers who plan to cross the national park on foot. Logistics take more planning than in town.

Before you book a stay there, confirm how you will get in, whether meals are included and when the last boat or return transfer leaves. Bring some cash, since card acceptance is not guaranteed in small places.

Overnight on Lan Ha Bay

Sleeping on the water is a different kind of stay, covered in our Lan Ha Bay guide. The visitor fee for the Cat Ba bay area depends on how many nights you stay. These 2026 fees apply from 1 January 2026 and are not a cabin or cruise rate.

Bay visitAdultsChildren from 6

2 nightsVND 600,000VND 500,000
3 nightsVND 650,000VND 550,000

Children under 6 are free. Ask whether the fee is included in your cruise or boat price. The fee does not mean any floating lodging is permitted. Authorities ordered stricter checks on boat licensing, crew, life jackets and fire safety in August 2026, so choose an operator that can show these basics. If you want to compare with the neighboring bay, see our sister guide to Ha Long Bay cruises.

Choosing and timing

The tourist season on Cat Ba opened on 28 March 2026, and hiking, cave visits and bay tours are on offer this autumn and winter. That does not mean every path or hotel is fully repaired after Typhoon Yagi in 2024, so ask your host what is open. Rain is far heavier from May to September (August averages 361 mm in Hai Phong) than in October to April.

If you arrive late from the mainland side or want a short stop before the ferry, you can also look at Ha Long City for a night. For activities near your base, read our things to do guide.
